The space
Place du Marché-Sainte-Catherine address where the apartment is located is a square located in the 4th arrondissement of Paris.
Its name recalls that the market established on the location of the former convent Sainte-Catherine-du-Val-des-Écoliers.
In 1778, the lawyer at the Parliament of Jacques-François Marchand du Colombier bought at auction the grounds of the Sainte-Catherine-du-Val-des-Écoliers convent, in order to build a market and create the surrounding streets. This covered market replaces the open-air market on Rue Saint-Antoine, which obstructed the road and posed unsanitary problems1.
Formed under the Letters Patent of April 15, 1783, this square was executed, in 1784, on the location of the Royal Priory of Couture-Sainte-Catherine by the Comptroller General of Finance, Henri Le Fèvre d ‘Ormesson, and architect Louis Caron. It is now surrounded by tall buildings built around 1787, forming a homogeneous set, with, in the center, a canopy planted with white mulberry trees from China.
